Top down activities rely on students knowing something about the topic and either understanding how particular exchanges in certain social situations work, this strategy said to be “automatic method” because it is automatically focused on the meaning. The learners are expecting to comprehend the main idea of the reading or the listening activities based on their prior knowledge. In addition, it helps how the learners guess unfamiliar words or phrases contextually. Top-Down enhances prediction abilities of the learners. In order to comprehend text background knowledge, it has its own effect.

Before working on the activities take a minute to think on the following:

  • How will the activity be modeled?
  • Materials
  • What stages will the activity be divided into?
  • What resources will be needed?
Top down strategies involves listening to conversations and identifying where they take place, reading information about a topic then listening to find wether or not the same points are mentioned, or inferring the relationships between the people involved.
